Course Outline:

The following steps taken each day are all directly related to those taken in the real word of filmmaking.

Day 1: Introduction and Concept Development

Kids will have a chance to get to know each other, followed by a brainstorming of key concepts or ideas that will be the backbones of the film. By the end of the day, kids will have agreed on the plot, as well as the main characters.

Day 2: Pre-Production

This day will be dedicated towards pre-production. With the plot and characters, kids will write a real script with a professional scriptwriting program, learning of the basic formats used in film scripts. Everyone will also be taught the concept of the Character Arc, with the idea that the Protagonist must fail before reaching his goal in order to grow by the end of the plot, and the basic plot points of the story such as the climax. As the Script is being written, one person will develop a list of all the props and costumes that will be needed during production. (The following is optional) Working with the Scriptwriters, another group of people (Storyboard Artists) will sketch the storyboards of most of the shots in the film, giving everybody an idea of what the film will look like. Also, another person will develop a shot list that will include all the shots that will need to be filmed during production. (The following is optional) Meanwhile, a small group will venture the school taking digital photographs of ideal locations that will be used as sets during filmmaking. These will be shown to everybody, and by the end of the day, the script, storyboards and shot list will be finished, and the locations, props, and costumes will all be sorted out.

Day 3: Shooting

At the beginning of the day, key roles will be assigned: Director, Director of Photography, Production Manager, Wardrobe and Makeup, and PA’s (Production Assistants that will operate the slate board, keeping track of the shots with the Director, etc.). By The end of the previous day, kids will have decided which characters they would like to be in the film. Everyone will need to shoot a minimum of three shots to contribute to the film, and throughout the day, roles in the crew can be rotated. The entire day will be shooting, in and around the school, and by the end of the day, shooting will be complete.

Day 4: Post Production

This day will be dedicated to Post Production, the main thing being editing the movie. Kids will use iMovie HD on an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo to edit the film. Kids will be shown the different processes involved in editing, from capture to splicing, and all kids will get a chance to cut the film. Sound, music, transitions and special effects will follow. In the sound process, audio levels will be adjusted to make the dialogue understandable as well as make the sound smooth, in music (The following is optional) kids will be able to create their own soundtrack using a movie-scoring program, or bring in their own music. Transitions and special effects can be added to polish the film.

Day 5: Premiere

With the finished film, friends and family will be invited to a premiere screening of the film. The film will be shown and a DVD copy of it will be given to each participant in the course.
